Long French wabi-sabi bench in weathered pine – circa 1900

A beautiful long French farmhouse bench from circa 1900, made of solid pine with an exceptionally lovely, lived-in patina. The pale, dry wooden surface shows more than a century of use: old scratches, stains, discolouration, drying cracks and visible wooden repairs together form a layered and entirely natural whole. The long, narrow plank seat rests on two wide, sculpturally shaped trestle legs. The curved contours and profiled feet have an almost primitive, handmade quality reminiscent of old French folk art furniture. Beneath the seat, triangular braces and a long stretcher provide an honest, functional construction. The seat has a slight natural bow along its length, caused by movement of the wood. Good antique condition with clear, characterful signs of use and age: scratches, stains, colour differences, old cracks, small losses and heavily weathered areas. Some old wooden inserts and historic repairs in the seat; old, inactive traces of woodworm. The seat has a slight natural bow. Structurally stable and ready to use.
