The sand rose is an evaporitic rock, meaning that it can only form with the underground evaporation of water from groundwater, buried under the earth (most often clay) or sand, generating lenticular crystallization of soluble minerals, notably gypsum, but also barium (perfectly rounded barite roses). The way in which these constituent elements fit together is similar to the assembly of the petals of a rose.
