Oil on canvas. Northern Italian school of the 17th century. Veronica, a character who appears during the Passion of Christ, was the pious woman who, following Jesus on his way to Calvary with the cross on his shoulders, wiped his face with a cloth: according to tradition, the face of Jesus was imprinted on the cloth. The saint is therefore iconographically represented holding this cloth, in memory of the miracle received as a result of her charitable act, as in this painting, where on the left, in the background, the three crosses of Golgotha appear, towards which Veronica turns, to remind us that she witnessed the death of Jesus. Already restored and re-canvas, probably at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century, the canvas shows other small losses of colour and stains. It is presented in an old gilded frame.
