Berber rug mixed weave (carpet and kilim) 247 x 158 cm

This is an original piece that combines the flat weave of the kilim and the thicknesses of the pile carpet. The beni ouarain carpet is undoubtedly the best known of berber carpets. It is characterized by its thick wool in ecru tones and its geometric diamond-shaped patterns, often black or brown. However, we now find some with brightly colored patterns. Originally, the beni ouarain carpet is also characterized by its very large size. Indeed, the beni ouarain tribe comes from the middle atlas, it is therefore subject to a harsh climate. The carpets were therefore used as mattresses and blankets, people wrapped themselves in them to sleep and protect themselves from the cold. The beni ouarain berber carpet is handcrafted, by hand on a loom. The woolen threads are knotted one after the other, which requires a very long production time, which can range from several days to several months depending on its size.
