Geoffrey Harcourt System Series chair for Artifort, 1960s

Elegant upholstered chair designed by Geoffrey Harcourt for Artifort in the 1960s, as part of his early System Series. The design is remarkably restrained: a softly shaped seat and backrest resting on four slender chromed-steel legs. Without armrests, buttons or unnecessary detailing, the chair has a light and almost graphic silhouette. The chair has been carefully rebuilt and newly upholstered in a high-quality light-grey furniture fabric. Its fine, abstract pattern adds texture and gives the quiet colour scheme a subtle graphic quality. The upholstery forms a refined combination with the clean chromed-steel frame. Comfortable enough to be used as an occasional or bedroom chair, while its compact proportions also make it suitable as a desk or dining chair. A distinctive and highly usable example of Geoffrey Harcourt’s early work for Artifort. The chrome base retains light traces of age consistent with its vintage character.
