Chinoiserie lamp in glazed ceramic – France, circa 1950

Elegant lamp in white glazed ceramic with crackled glaze, made in France around 1950, in a chinoiserie style characteristic of the taste for the Far East that permeated the mid-20th century. The slender, architecturally shaped body is adorned with three raised Chinese characters arranged vertically, whose presence goes beyond mere decorative function to place the piece within a strong symbolic tradition: 壽 (shòu) – longevity. 祿 (lù) – prosperity, material success. 光 (guāng) – light, brilliance. Traditionally, this trilogy consists of 福祿壽 (happiness, prosperity, longevity). The choice here of 光 (light) in place of 福 (happiness) is particularly remarkable and deeply coherent with the nature of the object: light becomes both functional and symbolic, embodying brilliance, protection, and benevolence. The sobriety of the white glaze, delicately animated by a fine network of cracks, highlights the relief of the decoration and gives the whole a presence that is both refined, timeless, and soothing. The silhouette evokes ritual vases or Asian altar objects, reinterpreted here in an elegant and measured Western reading. Lamp in very good condition, with the electrical system completely renewed.
