French Romantic School, 19th century Portrait of a man, a self-portrait? Oil on paper Framed under glass: 43 x 34.5 cm This rather mysterious portrait could be a self-portrait of the artist who painted it. The three-quarter pose and the gaze fixed on the viewer suggest this. What this man seems to be looking at is himself. Similarly, the model's appearance recalls the image of the romantic, bohemian, and tortured artist. It is also very interesting to note that he used a range of dark colours to reinforce this idea of melancholy. It has been suggested that this small oil on paper may be close to the art of François Bonvin (1817-1887) and Théodule Ribot (1823-1891), as we are clearly in proximity to this very original artistic universe. Our artist clearly fits into this same artistic movement, where Romanticism draws inspiration from painters like Ribera and Rembrandt, from whom he borrows a rather bold painting style, and similarly addresses dark subjects where introspection is important.
