This very old terracotta jug was handmade by the tekes, bantus of central africa, the majority of whom are in the republic of congo. They used and still use plant pigments and organic matter to give these sublime dark and red hues to the pottery that was cooked over an open fire. The varnished effect is due to a engobe (soiled clay coating) that is put before cooking. Often the pieces were polished with pebbles to accentuate the brilliance. This two-handled jug touched us with its beauty and by the artisanal and ancestral techniques used to make it so beautiful. It was manufactured in the first half of the last century and was intended for visiting tourists of the time. Placed on a niche or on a piece of furniture, alone, combined or matched, it will represent with character the authentic ethnic spirit while accommodating a modern and uncluttered or warm décor. The jug has a nice patina acquired over time. There is no lack but a very slight line all around the base of the beak (visible in the photos) that might suggest an old break, but without any certainty. Anyway, it does not in any way harm its superb rendering. Height: 30 cm. Width: 22 cm. Weight: 1, 415 kg.
