German Dental Instrument Cabinet by Arnold Biber, Pforzheim, Circa 1920

An exceptionally rare German dental instrument cabinet manufactured by Arnold Biber of Pforzheim, circa 1920. Originally designed for professional dental practices, it combines specialized functionality with a striking architectural form and ingenious mechanical construction. The cabinet features glazed upper compartments, enclosed storage sections, a central work surface, and distinctive pivoting, fan-shaped instrument trays on both sides. Each tray swings independently outward, providing convenient access while creating a remarkable sculptural effect. The deep black finish contrasts beautifully with the polished metal fittings, hinges and hardware. The original brass maker’s plaque reading “Arnold Biber, Pforzheim” remains preserved inside. Arnold Biber established his dental laboratory in Pforzheim in 1886. Following his death, the business was acquired by Dr. Fritz Winkelstroeter in 1908 and expanded into the production of dental equipment. The company later developed into Dentaurum, one of Germany’s long-established dental manufacturers. The cabinet has undergone a comprehensive professional restoration, preserving its historic character, original construction and distinctive mechanical details. Its black surfaces have been carefully refinished, while the metal fittings and mechanisms have been restored and polished. An unusual provenance adds further interest: the cabinet was acquired in Norway, where, according to its previous owner, it had originally been brought from Argentina. Today, this exceptional piece would make a striking collector’s cabinet, display cabinet, bar cabinet or statement piece in a sophisticated interior. A rare surviving example of early 20th-century German dental furniture, combining historical significance, engineering ingenuity and sculptural design.
