Description
Period: ca. Late 19th - early 20th century this brass footed bowl is engraved over its entire surface with large bands of decoration representing floral motifs and buddhist swastikas. The engravings are very detailed, clear and of good quality. Another mark of quality is the underside which has been decorated with a high relief pattern/applique; this seems to be quite rare. Brass has a reddish tone indicating a high copper content. Comparative research has led me to conclude that this bowl dates from the late 19th century (possibly early 20th) and comes from java. Its use was ceremonial (offerings) as well as domestic (washing fruit and serving betel nuts). It is usually called a bokor bowl. Condition: good. No damage. Some areas where copper has come to the surface. The inside of the bowl shows use. Dimensions: 9 cm high, 18 cm in diameter, 0.75 kg.
