This woodcut, or ukiyo-e, signed by the artist ogata gekko (1859-1920). It depicts a scene taking place on the island of onigashima, a warrior observes two monkeys in human dress chatting with a man. This scene is part of the album gekko zuihitsu, plate 29, edited by matsuki heikichi and dating from meiji 24 (1891). The term "oban" means the most common format for engraving in japan, measuring about 37 × 25 cm, while "tate-e" indicates that the engraving is vertical. Stamped framed under glass in an oak frame. Very good condition. Size: Frame: 45 X 33.5 X 1 cm. Oban: 36 X 25 cm approx.
