A richly carved oak column or pedestal with a twisted shaft (spiral column): broad spiral bands alternate with rows of beads and sunken dots. The shaft stands on a turned ring above a square base with large acanthus leaves, volutes and fine nailhead ornament, and carries a square top with a moulded edge and a framed panel of boards. All the carving was done by hand and the oak has a warm, honey-brown patina. The shape and ornament – the twisted shaft and the acanthus base – are consistent with the Renaissance Revival and historicist furniture of the 19th century, as widely made in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The carving is bold and almost sculptural: the beaded spiral makes the column seem to turn. At 104.5 cm it is ideal as a plant stand or as a pedestal for a sculpture or bust. Suits a classic, country or eclectic interior and gives a calm, modern interior a warm, hand-crafted accent. Lovely in a hallway, beside a fireplace or by a window with a large plant. Good condition, with clear signs of age. A drying crack runs along the length of the shaft, slightly wider around a knot. The top has shrinkage gaps between the boards, scratches and some wear. Small worn spots on the base and the ring and some dust in the deep carving. No missing parts or visible restorations seen. Stands firmly.
