Old cast from the national museums after a sculpture kept at the Vaison-la-Romaine museum in the so-called Maison d'Apollo Laurea. See workshopsartmuseesnationaux[dot]fr/fr/sculptures/pb002630. Long compared to a laureate Venus, this head of a laureate Apollo is a copy from the 2nd century AD. B.C. From a Greek original from the end of the 5th century BC. BC, with a natural and idealized classical style. The work takes up the Greek profile (nose as an extension of the forehead), the lines are pure, the surfaces smooth. The wide, rounded hairstyle contrasts with the elongated, oval shape of the face. This head was discovered in the Messii's house in 1925, a vast residence of 200 m², a very large surface area for a city center residence. Important and symbolic ornament of the archaeological museum of Vaison-la-Romaine. It is a faithful replica in marble powder resin made by the Louvre casting workshop (signed with the hollow stamp located at the back of the subject), it rests on a veined black marble base. Good condition, beautiful patina, Dimensions: 36 cm high X 24 cm wide X 23 cm deep. Base dimensions (cm): h. 7 × l. 16 × p. 14. The Louvre molding workshop was created in 1794, two years after the creation of the Louvre museum. Born from the desire of the Enlightenment to spread artistic and scientific knowledge, its primary vocation was to provide museums and schools of fine arts with faithful reproductions of the masterpieces of ancient statuary. Since 1895 it has been attached to the association of national museums.
