Antique Chinese chest in green lacquered elm – China, circa 1900

This ancient Chinese chest made of green lacquered elm is a dowry chest with a sliding lid and floral façade on a green background. It originates from northern China, from the Qing dynasty, where the elm was lacquered in two colours: green on the visible face, red on the rest of the chest. The contrast between a cool façade and red sides was intentional. In northern homes, the chest was placed against the kang wall and was only visible from the front; the red sides were the ordinary protective lacquer, cheaper and more durable. The chest is made of solid elm, with visible dovetail joints at the corners. The lid, made of two planks, slides on the upper edge and remains unlaquered on top. The bottom features reinforcing crossbars. On the deep bluish-green surface, eight bouquets in coral orange unfold: peonies (mudan 牡丹), chrysanthemums (ju 菊), lilies, and bindweed, with butterflies (die 蝶) fluttering among them. The association of flowers and butterflies is a harbinger of marital joy, suitable for a dowry piece. An incised line frame runs around the perimeter, and the corners feature an angular Greek key design. The green lacquer retains its body well and has only lightened in areas of friction. The red sides show much more wear, with the wood appearing in large patches. The contrast between the two faces is now more pronounced than originally. At seat height, it serves as an entry bench, side table, or storage at the foot of the bed. The deep green makes it particularly effective in interiors with a neutral palette. Details.
