George III hardwood architect's desk by Thomas Chippendale

We are delighted to offer for sale this very rare original architect's desk by Thomas Chippendale, George III, circa 1780. This is an extremely fine, highly collectible, and rare Georgian English piece. Most likely made in Thomas Chippendale's workshop, this piece features several references to this particular type of sculpture, including the double front desk presented in "The Gentleman’s and Cabinet Makers Director" by Chippendale. It is a true feat of craftsmanship, considered the most beautiful desk seen in person. The front slides naturally on period rollers, with two hidden compartments and two concealed drawers; the top lifts and can be used in multiple positions. Regarding the condition, there are some losses and patinas, all restorable by a French cabinetmaker and waxer at cost price; they have been left as is for the new owner to decide. More specifically, one of the pins is missing on the gallery rail, there would have been a sliding top over the drawers with a writing surface in leather or felt, as well as a wooden rail at the base of the top. The lock has a later internal replacement without a key. Dimensions: Height 88 cm, Width 94 cm, Depth 56 cm, Leg height 58 cm. All measurements are taken at the widest point. Thomas Chippendale (1718–1779) was a renowned English furniture maker known for his Georgian, Rococo, and Neoclassical designs. This piece is available for collection at our Wimbledon warehouse. The condition is good with age-related wear, with slight discolouration.
