Art Deco vase in black and gold by Lucien Brisdoux

Art Deco vase in black and gold glazed stoneware signed Lucien Brisdoux (1878-1963). This vase is shaped like an amphora. A network of golden lines adorns the glazed surface. This golden motif recalls the Japanese Kintsugi style. However, the gold simply enhances the piece as, unlike Kintsugi art, it does not conceal any cracks or imperfections. Lucien Brisdoux (1878-1963) is the creator of this style. His signature is affixed to the base of the vase. Lucien Brisdoux (1878-1963), a French ceramist, succeeded his father Achille Brisdoux. He took over the Bonny-sur-Loire factory in 1905. In 1918, he purchased the pottery "La Poterie Neuve" in Saint-Amand. Brisdoux then opened his own workshop, assisted by Fernand Laurent (1885-1946). He dedicated his production to decorative stoneware and explored clays and glazes. Raoul Lachenal took up some of his research in 1924-1925 and created a few pieces in collaboration with him. Brisdoux excelled in the use of metallic oxides and in metallic glazing (gold or platinum). The pouring effects are achieved by spraying creosote after applying ceramic gold. He abandoned this technique in 1940 for economic reasons and sold his workshop in 1956. His finest pieces, like our Art Deco vase in glazed stoneware, feature typical brown or blue backgrounds of the 1930s aesthetic.
