This antique Chinese writing desk with a drop leaf made of pine wood, featuring an interior compartment and wrought iron closure hardware, is a writing or counter piece from northern China around 1930. The item does not retain a manufacturer's label and is described by typology and region. This typology served as a counter or account desk in small rural shops in China, where the merchant stored account books, seals, and small change under the drop leaf. The standing work height and the locked drop leaf were characteristic of counter furniture. The structure rests on four square legs reinforced by low perimeter crossbars. The top, a solid panel mounted on crossbars, tilts on wrought iron hinges and closes with a long through plate with a hook. The interior is constructed as a box, with rebates to accommodate small accessories. Details.
