Rio lounge chair by Oscar Niemeyer with black lacquered ash frame. Mattress and headrest upholstered in black full-grain leather. The Rio lounge chair is an armchair designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and his daughter Anna Maria Niemeyer in 1978. The structure of this seat is made up of three curved elements. The first, the largest, serves as the chair's balance point. The other two, which are screwed to the first, serve as supports to accommodate the backrest and the seat. The common material for these three elements is black open-pore varnished ash. The seat and back of the chair are actually a single element long enough to support the user's legs, hence the name "chaise longue." The cylindrical headrest is fitted with two leather cords at each end. These small cords are fitted with weights to facilitate the adjustment of the headrest. I bought it new in 1998. It is in very good overall condition with only minor wear on the frame (photo attached), a few fine scratches on the underside (part lying on the floor) and a small dent in the wood at the back (photo attached). The leather is in excellent condition. The seat cushion and headrest are not sagging at all.
