Angel alonso, 1923-1994. Dyptic 1959. 2 watercolours and chinese ink on paper, marbled on fine cardboard, a monogrammed board and dated 1959 with a small stabilized. Every 50 X 66 cm. Angel alonso arrived in paris in the early 1950s and adopted lyrical abstraction, the only language accepted by the artistic community. At the turn of the 60s/70s, the artist radicalized his language by adopting monochrome sometimes punctuated by a heterogeneous material (pebbles, bits of wood) or sanctioned by a trace (memory of a passage or past). In the following decade 1975/1987 his passion for matter made him associate with his pure colors different substances that enrich or contrast them: earth, straw, ash, coal dust, burnt plants, crushed marbles, wood, crushed butts, torn papers or rags... Its pure color always exceptional, incomparable, is totally invented, manufactured by the artist himself (alonso hated acrylic and would never have bought a tube of paint commercially). Then, until the end of his life, he experimented with sumptuous black monochromes enriched with the most beautiful coal ore, anthracite, which he also contrasted with a purely white surface. The sudden death of angel alonso in 1994 interrupts a daily experimental alchemy.
