Rien Goené studied at the Utrecht Academy of Fine Arts, Artibus, from 1947. He studied painting under Mar Diemèl, sculpture under Piet Jongbloed, and monumental art under Abram Stokhof de Jong. Inspired by the Cobra movement, founded in 1948, Goené developed an experimental and expressive approach. His sculptures, generally abstract, were made from scrap metal and bronze. As a painter, he worked with vibrant oils, exploring abstract and figurative themes (landscapes and women), drawing inspiration from artists such as Henri Matisse and Picasso. In the 1960s, Goené became a professor at Artibus. Following a disagreement with the management regarding his pedagogy, he had to leave the academy. In 1956, Goené became a member of the Sint Lucas Artists' Association, and then, in the 1960s, of Stuwing. Stuwing brought together modern sculptors and painters eager to work freely and experiment with forms and materials. Goené shared the ideas of this group. In 1958, he became a member of the Society for the Love of Art, and in 2006, he was appointed an honorary member. His daughter Yvette (born in 1959) is a visual artist working with enamel. Father and daughter exhibited together in Friesland in 1994. Goené regularly exhibited in the Netherlands and abroad, notably at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and in various galleries and museums in the Benelux, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, and Sweden. He was permanently represented by the Guildhall Gallery in Chicago.
