This is a really gorgeous 19th century Indian table, with tons of character. Traditional thakats, like this one from Rajasthan, had multiple uses, which included working, eating and sleeping. Also commonly used by merchants as a platform to work from and usually outside, though this one was almost certainly an interior piece of some superior quality and most likely primarily, for dining. It is also much less rustic and weathered than other examples one might discover. Thakats are lower in height than western tables, though this one is unusually taller than commonly found examples. It’s a strikingly large piece of furniture, solidly constructed from teak. An imposing piece, with turned legs, which typically flare out at the foot, iron reinforcing struts, a decorative studded border and attractive brass banding. And central brass strip on the top. The surface has a wonderful patina, with wear consistent with more than a century of use. It has a few old, nicely crafted. Small artisan repairs to this top surface, attesting to the value to it’s owner. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to find original thakats such as this. A totally charming table that would make a lovely, unique and very functional addition to any home. Width 110cm length 156cm height 64cm.
