Original drawing in black chalk by Jean Villette (1913-2005)

I am selling this beautiful original drawing on canson paper signed jean villette (1913-2005), artist and historian from chartres, specialist in chartres and its cathedral, to which he devoted numerous works. This black chalk drawing represents vézelay, above the cure valley (yonne), as evidenced by the handwritten mention of the artist on the reverse. The artist depicts with a lively and confident stroke the village perched on its hill, seen from a meadow where the silhouettes of three cows can be seen in the distance. We observe a beautiful mastery of shadow and light, with deep nuances in the dark areas, characteristic of black stone. On the reverse, a yellow sticker inscribed “26” testifies to the probable exhibition of this drawing during the artist's lifetime: this drawing was acquired as a lot during an auction in chartres in september 2023 during the dispersal of the jean villette collection; the twenty other drawings, charcoals or lithographs which made up the lot also have stickers on the back, or even annotations in the artist's hand. I kept some of them, i'm getting rid of the others because I don't have enough walls to hang them all! Good condition: a small defect to note at the bottom left of the pattern, which I only noticed when looking at the reverse (see photos). Objectively, it is imperceptible because it merges with the pattern of the grasses in the foreground. I am selling a slight variation of this landscape (see my other listings), in immaculate condition. Sheet format: h. 35 X l. 49 cm. Format of the drawing: h. 23 X l. 33.5 cm.
