Pair of lounge chairs by Dutch architect Wim Hofman 1980s

These lounge chairs were created as part of a special architectural commission, where Hofman was invited to design the interior and furniture for a building by renowned Dutch architect Fons Verheyen. The design clearly reflects the influence of the Memphis Group, the radical Italian postmodern movement founded by Ettore Sottsass. Memphis design is characterized by its expressive use of colour, geometric playfulness, and its rejection of modernist restraint in favour of bold, sculptural expression. The chairs feature black marble-look panels, chrome tubular armrests, and original geometric upholstery in primary colours. The design evokes a sense of joy and play, and explores contrast, rhythm, and form—hallmarks of the Memphis era. A rare and collectible example of Dutch design at the intersection of architecture and the expressive, radical spirit of 1980s postmodernism. Both pieces remain in good condition, with some patina to the back panels as shown in the photos.
