This solid pine sideboard features a utilitarian front with three upper drawers and two lower doors, adorned with wrought iron ring handles and framed panels with simple mouldings. Shandong, China, circa 1950. The Shandong province, on the eastern coast of China, maintained functional domestic carpentry during the first half of the 20th century, inheriting the Qing repertoire but with less ornamental burden than that of Shanxi. These sideboards were placed in kitchens, pantries, or secondary rooms for domestic storage. The construction is honest and robust: solid pine for the structure and facades, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and floating panels framed to absorb the movements of the wood. The upper drawers slide on wooden runners, and the lower cabinet includes a middle shelf. Details. Materials and techniques: Solid pine; wrought iron hardware; mortise and tenon joinery. Place of origin: Shandong, China. Period: Late Qing tradition. Date of manufacture: Circa 1950. Dimensions: Length 106 cm × Depth 41 cm × Height 105 cm. Condition: Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Original patina.
