A vase from the Ząbkowice glassworks, designed by Jan Sylwester Drost and made by Stanisław Macha in Poland in the 1970s, is an example of expressive mid-century modern design in soda glass. Its thick, uniformly formed walls are covered with a marbled pattern – dynamically and irregularly interpenetrating warm tones of orange, amber, red, white, and yellow – achieved through advanced glass mass colouring techniques. The vase's shape is based on a wide, bulbous base that gradually narrows towards a tall neck, topped with a subtly wavy, ribbed edge. The smooth, highly polished surface intensely reflects light, highlighting both the depth of colour and the organic lines of the decor. The vase has no visible joining lines – it was made as a whole, most likely by blowing or in a mould. The condition is very good, with no losses, cracks, or significant signs of age, retaining its original colour and shine. This vase tells the story of Polish glass from the 1970s, when coloured, energetic forms were meant to brighten interiors and bring joy, contrasting with the everyday life of the decade. The waves of colour seem to flow through the massive form, as if frozen in motion – a decorative gesture of an era seeking modern means of expression, combining artistic freedom with the noble simplicity of craftsmanship. The shimmering, intense colours and expressive lines combine here in a form that even today evokes associations with the optimism and boldness of the design of those years. This vase will fit well if placed on a low sideboard made of natural wood, in bright daylight or under directional lighting that enhances the reflections on the polished surface. It can be combined with minimalist ceramics, Murano glass bowls in a matching colour palette, or geometric graphics based on motifs from the 1970s to emphasise its connection with mid-century modern. In interiors based on neutral colours, the vase will bring energy, while in eclectic collections – it will highlight the era's boldness and the role of colour as a means of artistic expression.
