African monkey mask from cameroon. African tribal art. First tribal art. A magnificent ceremonial monkey mask of the boulou tribe. The boulou inhabit the hilly and forested regions of cameroon, they are also found in equatorial guinea and northern gabon. They are a subgroup of the fang people. This type of beautifully hand-carved mask was used during bulu ceremonies. The monkey was a sacred animal that was revered for its intelligence, humor and sense of survival. Monkeys also played a major role in the legends of the tribe; joyful stories were often told around a campfire. This pretty boulou monkey mask would be a wonderful asset to your home and collection.
