Magnificent authentic 176-year-old engraving, not a mere reproduction: Argus • Edition: 1849 • Size: 15 x 24 cm • Artist: Edouard Travies • Condition: Very good, some minor signs of age The artist of this work is Édouard Traviès de Villers (1809-1876), a French animal painter, illustrator, and lithographer, particularly known for his depictions of birds and insects. The engraving is taken from Charles d’Orbigny’s Dictionnaire d’histoire naturelle (Dictionary of Natural History), a 19th-century scientific work containing plates and detailed descriptions of the animal and plant kingdoms. Combining scientific rigor and artistic quality, each engraving accurately illustrates natural diversity, making this dictionary an educational and decorative document, ideal for framing and collecting. The male Argus is famous for its enormous wings adorned with ocelli resembling eyes. Its mottled brown plumage transforms into a spectacular fan during courtship displays. Its majestic posture makes it a marvel of nature. • Find all our lithographs and prints in my shop • Message me with any questions • Fast shipping and careful packaging for safe delivery • For bulk purchases, message me to arrange a discount Reference: 46-1-95 Text inscribed on the engraving: 39 (PI.D), ARGUS (Phasianus Argus, Lin.). ---- Decoration, vintage, Asia, pheasant, seduction, dance, jungle
