This ancient chest painted blue, made of pine wood, with original turquoise paint and a wrought iron lock entry, is a popular piece from Central Europe around 1900. Painted chests from Central Europe were central pieces of the rural domestic trousseau: young couples and fiancées received them as wedding furniture, decorated with flowers, initials, or popular motifs. They housed the most precious clothing, textiles, and personal items. The vibrant palette—blue, green, red—reflected the popular Alpine and Balkan taste. The chest is constructed from reinforced mitered pine boards, with a hinged iron lid and a central lock. The turquoise paint is applied over an older green base that shows through in small losses and on the edges. A low perimeter moulding completes the silhouette. The turned feet are a recent addition that slightly elevates the piece. Details.
