Old pheasant plate in Longwy ceramic

A breath of Japan flows through this vintage plate, whose beautiful decoration is painted in a deep blue monochrome: a pheasant with a long arched tail leans towards a small bird perched on a rock, while a cascade of bamboo foliage unfolds around the edge of the plate. The composition, largely open in the centre, skillfully plays with asymmetry and emptiness — the very signature of the Japonisme aesthetic that captivated French ceramicists at the end of the 19th century. The Longwy factory, founded in 1798 in Lorraine, particularly excelled in interpreting Far Eastern motifs, of which this "Japanese" series remains one of the most sought-after testimonies by collectors. The mark on the reverse, featuring the "Longwy Japonais" crest, confirms this attribution. Sold in its original condition with a fine crack visible in the photos.
