Reproduction of an old map of Annecy taken from the Theatrum Sabaudiae. The Theatrum Sabaudiae is a remarkable work created for the House of Savoy at the end of the 17th century to demonstrate its power to other princely houses of Europe. Its creation began in 1657 under the regency of Christine of France, wife of Duke Victor-Amadeus I of Savoy; it was continued by her son, Duke Charles-Emmanuel II. It lasted 25 years. The Theatrum consists of two folio volumes – one dedicated to Piedmont and the other to Savoy – richly illustrated with engravings representing the main cities of the States of Savoy and providing a very comprehensive description of the life, customs, economy, and history of this territory.
