Revered for her profound mystical union with Christ, she is often depicted at his side, as here. Jesus takes the saint's hand in a gesture expressing a strong spiritual intimacy, while the woman's gaze conveys devotion and total abandonment to the divine will. Stylistically, the work displays characteristics typical of 17th-century north-central Italian painting, with chiaroscuro influences borrowed from Caravaggism.
