This fully restored Austrian cabinet from the 1930s is presented with a well-founded attribution to Josef Frank, and shows strong conceptual and formal connections to the Haus & Garten design philosophy. The cabinet is constructed from solid cherry wood and cherry veneer, complemented by Cuban mahogany veneer, while the interior is finished in birch veneer, reflecting the refined and deliberate material choices characteristic of high-quality Viennese furniture of the period. The floral-pattern upholstery on the exterior is not original; it was replaced in the 1950s, yet today it represents an authentic historical layer and survives in flawless condition. During restoration, all wooden surfaces were finished with a new, traditionally hand-applied shellac, enhancing the warmth, depth, and natural grain of the wood. The cabinet retains its original lock and key, as well as the distinctive key shield and ball-strap fittings, which are clear and recurring design elements in Josef Frank’s furniture. Based on my own research, the form language, proportions, material use, and internal functional layout align closely with the principles of Haus & Garten: human-centered modernism, softened functionalism, and a deliberate balance between structure and decoration. Despite its solid, heavy construction, the cabinet appears light and elegant due to its curved forms and well-resolved proportions. An exceptionally rare and unique collector’s piece.
