He met wassily kandinsky and participated in the 2nd exhibition of der blaue reiter in 1912. A trip to tunisia in 1914 opened his eyes to new colors. He also taught at the bauhaus art school in germany. Klee is said to have started using the pointillism used in this painting when he traveled to italy in 1926 and saw mosaic murals in ravenna, where early christian architecture is prevalent. Klee paints this unique christian cathedral with a series of domes evoking islamic influences.
