Dimensions without frame: 46x56cm. *jehan frison, born in brussels on january 27, 1882 and died in linkebeek on october 22, 1961, was a belgian painter, aquafortist, draftsman, wood sculptor and engraver1. Biography. Jehan frison began his studies at the academy of saint-josse-ten-noode, then, from 1896 to 1902, continued his training at the royal academy of fine arts in brussels (with a one-off break for the academic year 1897-1898)2. It was at the brussels academy that he met rik wouters (1882-1916)3, himself enrolled between 1900-1904 and between 1907-19082. The two artists maintained friendly relations, especially at the time when the wouters lived in the commune of boitsfort (1904-1914) and when, for a time, only j. Frison, victor seydel and fernand verhaegen (1883-1975) visited them in their slum and attic which served as a studio. Rik wouters also made the bust of j. Frison, portrait of the painter frison (bronze) which he exhibited at the IV salon of the cercle d'art les indépendants in brussels in 1907. They are also known for a joint exhibition with some friends of the cercle d'art bruxellois rietkamerke, organized at the galerie boute, rue royale, from 19 to 27 january 19073. It was during the activities of the free workshop l'effort (opposed to academic normativism) that jehan frison became friends with his figurehead, the auderghemois fauvist painter, auguste oleffe (1867-1931). The historian paul colin cites j. Frison alongside rodolphe strebelle (1880-1959) and arthur navez (1881-1931) as one of the three best painters who, in the sequel to a. Oleffe, develops a strong and singular art. P. Colin describes j. Frison's painting as the most narrative. For him "it [his painting] does not interpret the subjects and does not transpose anything, or even the colors.
