Kokeshi were created by kiji-shi (wood craftsmen) in northern honshū (japan's largest island), in the tōhoku region, at the end of the edo era. At the beginning of their creation, these dolls representing little girls were small toys for children, before being sold as souvenirs for tourists. Their production then diversified in terms of size, shape and decoration. In the past, there were several words to designate japanese dolls, depending on their place of production (kogesu, kiboko, deko, etc.).
