Charming little painting framed in a gilt wooden baroque style frame, oil on wooden panel, depicting Lady Sybil Primrose as a child, a hand-painted reproduction after an original work by Frederic Leighton (1830 – 1896), marked on the back with a Chinese character. Lady Sybil Myra Caroline Grant (born Primrose) was the daughter of Lord Rosebery, the Liberal Prime Minister from 1894 to 1895, and Hannah de Rothschild. Born in 1879, she married Sir Charles Grant, of the well-known Grant whisky family, in 1903. On her father's death in 1929 she inherited his Epsom estate, The Durdans, and lived there until her death on 25 February 1955. Lady Sybil had a wide range of interests as a writer, ceramic designer, artist and successful breeder of horses and dogs. She also had a fondness for caravans and was a great supporter of gypsies. She was concerned for their welfare and helped to defend their tradition of camping at Epsom Downs during Derby Week. This painting is in used vintage condition, not perfect, spots and imperfections, a small chip in the paint, but it remains a nice and charming object, the gold frame is in very good condition, check the photos for more details!
