Orivit Art Nouveau Cup Model 2299

Period: ca. 1900-1905 this attractive cut is typical of the art nouveau style. The detailed and naturalistic decoration presents thistles held by pierced stems. The handles have flowing engraved heart designs. The round base has raised rib patterns. The base is marked "orivit 2299". Orivit was a german company (1894-1905) that invented an alloy and named it "orivit"; this is pewter that has had the lead removed and a little silver added to make it shine like silver when polished. The company was purchased by wmf in 1905 after running into financial problems. The branding on this dish is pre-wmf. Condition: good. No damage. Oxidation stains in places. Dimensions: 32 cm long, 24 cm wide, 5.5 cm high, 0.520 kg.
