Description
Halluin tapestry “the lady with the organ” based on a composition of six tapestries from the beginning of the 16th century dimensions: 95 X 115 cm this tapestry is part of the suite of six famous hangings of the lady and the unicorn. Five of these hangings have the five senses as their subject. The sixth represents a lady, richly dressed, who stands in front of a tent on which is written “to my sole desire” on a banner. Here, the organ, a musical instrument, represents in this tapestry one of the five senses: hearing. The sense of hearing is perfectly represented. All the actors on stage are listening to the sound of the instrument, whether it is the lion or the unicorn, very attentive, or the next one who follows the instrumentalist with her gaze so as not to miss the moment when it is necessary to activate the bellows. Looking more closely, we can see that the lion, representing strength, and the unicorn, representing purity, are also represented on the uprights of the organ, which highlights the separation between the next and the lady. The latter is also exaggeratedly enlarged to emphasize its social superiority, an element confirmed by the richness of its attire. Finally, we will note the richness of the composition, with the presence of a good number of details. Tapestry woven mainly in wool using halluin stitch. It is made and woven in france, in a northern factory where two of the workers received the label of best workers in france. Woven lined and ready to hang. A certificate of authenticity is affixed to the back of the tapestry.
