Old shallow dish with a red rooster, sponge decoration.

In the centre of this old shallow dish, a red rooster stands tall, its comb high, drawn with a fine line like in an old engraving. All around, a frieze of geometric patterns stamped with a sponge creates a scalloped crown in a soft, slightly grainy red, a signature of the popular earthenware of yesteryear. The stamped mark on the back, a crowned shield, attests to its past as pottery. The cream background, patinated by the years, with a few small wear marks on the edge and slight signs of use, tells a story of a well-lived life on country tables. A piece full of character, imperfect and endearing, just as we like them.
