Thuja box 23x13cm height 6cm —- one of the first uses of thuja was for the construction of the ceilings of beautiful homes or mosques, such as we can still see in traditional houses, and also such as the it can be found in some of the rooms at dar liouba. Then thuja was used to make chests, boxes and furniture, which could be left in their natural state, varnished or painted. At the end of the 19th century, a few marquetry makers from salé joined essaouira, bringing with them their centuries-old traditions of marquetry and inlays of motifs, most often geometric in ivory or ebony for the oldest, in mother-of-pearl, sometimes in wire. Silver and now more commonly lemon wood.
