Antique Art Deco silver-plated bakelite and marble bookends signed H. Moreau This pair of original bookends by H. Moreau depicts two small mice nibbling on a ball, probably made of cheese, made of orange bakelite. The bases are made of marble. Son of the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Moreau (1797-1855), Hippolyte François Moreau was born in 1832 in Dijon. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he exhibited from 1863 to 1914 at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he sent decorative subjects most often inspired by the 18th century. He won a medal at the 1878 World's Fair and another at the 1900 World's Fair. Among his famous sculptures is his 1880 statue of the French mathematician Alexis Clairaut, which is now part of one of the facades of the City of Paris. He died in 1927 in Neuilly-sur-Seine in France and today most of his works are in the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon. Sources: Wikipedia; Artnet In very good condition. Beautiful Art Deco patina.
