It is a millenary art listed as unesco's intangible heritage of humanity. The peasant women of west bengal assemble several layers of used clothing, most often saris, which they embroider with a stitch to make blankets or bedspreads. In the villages, after working in the fields and the house, women gather, without consideration of caste or religion, to paint with a needle and make the colors vibrate. Embroidery becomes a real social bond for these women whose conditions are precarious. This exceptional work gives them financial autonomy and improves their status within the community.
