A rare and visually striking set of six Irma dining chairs, designed by Achille Castiglioni for Zanotta in 1979. Named after Castiglioni’s wife, Irma Barni, the model reflects the designer’s unmistakable ability to merge engineering, ergonomics and sculptural simplicity into a highly recognisable form. Defined by their elegant architectural silhouette, the chairs combine black enamelled tubular steel frames with separate moulded saddle leather seat and backrest elements, creating a refined interplay between structure and material. The distinctive angular bend in the back forms the model’s iconic profile while subtly following the natural posture of the body, offering surprising comfort despite the minimal construction. The warm cognac saddle leather has developed a rich patina over time, enhancing the graphic contrast with the dark metal frames and adding character that only decades of use can create. Sophisticated yet understated, the Irma chairs sit effortlessly between postmodern Italian design and timeless minimalism. An increasingly uncommon set of six by one of Italy’s most influential designers, equally suited to collectible interiors as refined contemporary spaces. Good vintage condition with a beautiful aged patina to the saddle leather, including visible traces of use, scratches and markings consistent with age. Minor wear to the black enamelled frames. Structurally sound and ready for use. Dxhxl: 48x90x40 cm. Seat height: 44 cm.
