Small pedestal table / coffee table / side table composed of a beautiful round walnut top, and a tripod base with a trompe-l'oeil painting imitating the ebony of macassar (superb work of "forger"). In excellent condition. Modernist art deco style, france, circa 1930/1940. Attributed to jules leleu (1883-1961), a french designer and decorator who distinguished himself during the art deco period. After studying fine arts and trompe-l'oeil, jules leleu joined his father's painting business in 1909. With his brother, he added a "decoration" department and created a cabinetmaking workshop. After the war, under the name "leleu frères", jules specialized in furniture design and opened a showroom in boulogne-sur-mer before moving to paris in 1924. The leleu family had great success with the fitting out of liners for the compagnie générale transaltantique, then by carrying out orders for the royal and princely families, and by equipping many french and foreign institutions (embassies, presidential residences, administrations, banks...). Jules died in 1961. His descendants, already involved in the case, took over. They partnered with maison jansen in 1971, but despite this, private customers became scarcer and the company eventually closed. Leleu is still exhibited in many french and international museums, such as the musée des arts décoratifs in paris and the metropolitan museum of art in new york. Dimension: height 56cm. Diameter 63cm.
