Unique xxxl tapestry, called 'square diagonal', by one of the most important textile artists of the netherlands herman scholten (1932-2013). It has its signature with 1977 on the backside. It comes from the shell headquarters in rotterdam, where it was hanging in the entrance hall. This is really something special, a high-end monumental tapestry of outstanding quality. He used two different weaving techniques, nicely blending into each other. Very colorful and made of wool. It must be hung diagonally, as shown in the first photo. He was an admirer of the bauhaus and mondriaan, which one can see in this work as well. A museum piece! All the important museums for modern art in the netherlands (museum boijmans van beuningen, stedelijk museum, centraal museum, kroller muller) have works by herman scholten in their collection. Boijmans van beuningen and the centraal museum have also works from the same 'square' series, but the one offered here is much bigger and even more sophisticated. He also gained international recognition with several expositions in the u.s.a., including the moma. With the current revival in interest and appreciation of textile art, this work for sure will be very interesting for collectors. The tapestry is in very good original condition.
