Antique iron-bound pine chest – Central Europe, circa 1870

This ancient iron-bound pine chest is a chest from Central Europe with a domed lid featuring riveted wrought iron fittings and two locks. It originates from Central Europe, from the third quarter of the 19th century, when pine was worked into solid boards and reinforced with riveted iron bands. The domed lid distinguishes the travel chest from the domestic chest: the curved profile repelled water and allowed for stacking the load without crushing it. With two independent locks and ring handles on the sides, this piece was designed to be moved when loaded and to secure its contents. The case is made of solid pine. The lid does not describe a continuous curve: flat boards are mounted in a faceted arch on cut sides, with the tips of the nails folded inside. Radial wrought iron bands run across it, riveted with round-headed nails. The base is cut into arcs and extends the posts into feet. The front features two large iron rosettes cut into a six-pointed star, each inscribed within a lobed arch of riveted band. Between them, there are two iron lock entries with hasps. On the lid, brass rosette-headed nails punctuate the boards from one band to another. The fittings are not a concealed reinforcement but the main decorative motif, drawn against the light background of the wood. Details. Dimensions: Length 120 cm – Depth 62 cm – Height 80 cm.
