Square Mirror with Carved Wooden Frame Decorated with Dentils. Antique.
This mirror features a square frame made of carved wood, accented on all four sides with large protruding dentils, treated like regular crenellations, with solid corner spandrels. The old polychromy, worn and flaking, blends brown-red and black tones, revealing the wood underneath, while the original mercury glass displays its characteristic pitting and silver clouds. This architectural vocabulary of dentils, with an almost brutalist spirit ahead of its time, evokes popular frames and reclaimed woods from the 19th century; the deeply patinated surface makes it an object of texture, halfway between a mirror and a wall sculpture. Condition report: Generally good condition as is. Very worn old polychromy — an accepted patina that defines the object's identity — original mercury glass is pitted and oxidized. A characterful mirror that will complement both a rustic interior and a sleek contemporary decor.
