Lajos kozma, important armchairs, 1930s. This pair of armchairs is an exceptional example of hungarian furniture design from the late art deco period, blending modernist functionality with refined craftsmanship. The formal language, materials and construction closely parallel the designs of lajos kozma from 1928, preserved in the collection of the museum of applied arts in budapest. The curved black walnut armrests, triple horizontal rails, vertically veneered structural elements, and broad solid base reflect the signature features of kozma’s style. The pair was likely made to order, not as part of serial production, and most probably crafted in a hungarian workshop in the early 1930s. The original wooden structure has been fully preserved. The restoration was executed using only authentic, period-appropriate materials and traditional methods—including retied coil springs, natural burlap backing, and hand-tufted upholstery. The armchairs are newly upholstered with a luxury jacquard-woven fabric by fendi, selected for both its refined aesthetic and its fidelity to the period’s design language. Historical context: Comparable designs were published in hungarian and french design periodicals between 1934 and 1937, further supporting the attribution and historical importance of the set within the central european modernist tradition. Condition: Museum-grade restoration. Structurally sound and aesthetically flawless. The restoration process is fully documented with photographs.
