Huge ceramic relief by Gerd Hiort Petersen (GHP) for Søholm Denmark in the early 1960

Beautiful and rare ceramic relief by gerd hiort petersen (ghp) for søholm denmark in the early 1960s. Gerd hiort petersen hails from bornholm, and since 1973 she has run her own ceramic workshop on the island with her husband, ceramicist hans munck andersen. From the age of seven, gerd hiort petersen drew and painted, and as a young girl she considered becoming a sculptor or painter. But a visit to a classmate, who was the daughter of ceramicist lisbeth munch-petersen and painter poul høm, made her change her plans. When gerd hiort petersen was 17 years old, she started an apprenticeship at the ceramics factory michael andersen & son in 1954. At the factory, where gerd hiort petersen worked for two years, her encounters with artistic director daniel andersen, who had trained in austria-hungary, and ceramicist max riebe were particularly significant. They were instrumental in gerd hiort petersen's three-month apprenticeship at a workshop in gmunden, austria, where she learnt about unique production. She then went to the akademie für angewandte kunst in vienna 1956-57, where she met f. Hundertwasser, whose watercolours later became her favourite. This was followed by two stays at the danish school of arts and crafts in copenhagen, first in 1958-59, and after design assignments for the søholm pottery factory, again in 1962-65. The relief measures 27 cm in height, 32 cm in width, 3.5 cm in depth and weighs approx. 3000 grams. It is without cracks, chips or other flaws. All relevant stamps and signatures are present.
