Joep Thissen was born in Roermond on May 6, 1919, and grew up in a region with rich industrial and cultural traditions. He passed away in 1994. Thissen studied in The Hague and obtained a teaching certificate in drawing in 1938, developing a distinctive style that often incorporated elements of Expressionism and Cubism. Subsequently, Thissen worked as a designer at the St. Joris workshop in Beesel and employed the sgraffito technique to create unique pieces for the firm Loré. In addition to small ceramic objects, he created various ceramic facade reliefs. In the early 1950s, Thissen produced his first large-scale sculptures. He was fascinated by the human figure—particularly within group dynamics—and his work often reflects themes of labor, solidarity, and human strength. Many of his pieces focus on workers, craftsmanship, and human interaction. His art frequently mirrors the social conditions of his time. Although Thissen is less well-known on a national level, his work remains a significant contribution to the art history of Limburg, particularly due to his focus on the working class and his dynamic compositions. His style is characterized by power, energy, and a strong graphic sensibility.
